1. Why breed ducks?

3. Breeding spaces and facilities

Ducks need a clean, safe, and dry space to sleep, as well as an outdoor area to graze and, ideally, a small pool of water. The spaces must be larger than those dedicated to hens: up to 15 square meters per head of pasture. The shelter must be well ventilated but without drafts, with absorbent bedding (straw, shavings, hemp); a maximum density of 2-3 animals per square meter must be maintained inside. No perches are needed, because ducks derived from mallards do not use them.

The presence of a pond or a water container will allow them to keep their plumage in good condition and strengthen their well-being. They don’t need to have a large body of water, just a large tub that is easy to access can be enough to clean every day.

4. Feeding the ducks

Ducks can feed on grass, insects and plant waste, but for good production it is also important to provide balanced feed specific for ducks. A balanced diet includes:

• Specific feed, with a high protein value
• Chopped fresh vegetables (zucchini, lettuce, carrots)
• Access to pasture (when possible)
• Constant access to fresh, clean water

Remember that in some regions of Italy there may be restrictions on duck breeding due to avian flu epidemics: remember to always ask the veterinary office of your local health authority for information.

5. Reproduction and incubation

Ducks can reproduce naturally; breeding groups can be formed by one male and 4-5 females. If there are no duck hens available, the eggs can be hatched by female Muscovy ducks. Artificial incubation can also be used, as explained in a previous article. The incubation duration is 28 days.

6. Health and prevention Ducks are resistant but must still be protected from predators, parasites and respiratory diseases. Some good practices include:

• Dry and clean shelters
• Always clean water, especially for puddles
• Robust fences against foxes and other predators
